One of the ways that the IGI can further the interest of its members is by sponsoring events or activities that further the interests of the IGI membership.
To date, the organization has supported a wide variety of projects, either initiated by members or other groups or individuals who share some of the broad aspirations of the IGI. This sponsorship can take the form of organizational support, promotional activity, donation of artwork or other intellectual properties. In spite of having limited financial resources, on occasion we can also offer financial support to a project. Here are a number of projects we have supported to date.
The Illustrators' Guild of Ireland is very pleased to sponsor the activities of Candy Collective throughout 2008. Candy is a collective drawn from the Irish creative scene, which includes photographers, illustrators, designers, musicians and animators. The IGI sponsorship takes the form of financial support for the full range of Candy activities, including the Sweettalk [link] presentation series featuring some of today's leading Irish and international creative talents. Candy has been one the most exciting developments on the Irish creative scene in recent years and we're delighted to be involved. Watch out for some big names and exciting events coming up during 2008!
'Illustrating Illustration' is an exhibition co-curated by IGI Member Ale Mercado and Mary Butler, Arts Officer with Kilkenny County Council. The exhibition features eleven artists, from Ireland, Spain and the US and aims to visualise the process of illustration and portray that process and what it is about, i.e. concept creation, idea development, production of image and final reproduction. The resulting exhibition will open in Kilkenny, Ireland in June 2008, before traveling to Tomares in Spain in November 2008. Again, the IGI support takes the form of financial and promotional support.
This project is the brainchild of IGI Member Steve Doogan. The basic premise sees a number of sketchbooks circulating by post to participants drawn from the ranks of the IGI and beyond. The sketchbooks, in a variety sizes and formats, each have a theme, such as 'City' 'Menagerie' 'Once Upon A Time' etc. As the sketchbooks circulate, each participant fills a page (or two) with their own particular take on the particular theme. Each book develops into an artwork in its own right - a creative compendium of vastly different styles and perceptions. The plan is to create an exhibition when the project reaches completion. The IGI supports this project by covering the costs associated with securely posting these sketchbooks among so many artists around the country.
In 2002 members of the IGI donated the usage rights for a selection of artworks to The Carers Association (formerly Carers Ireland). This is Ireland's national voluntary organisation for and of family carers in the home. Family carers provide high levels of care to a range of people including frail older people, people with severe disabilities, the terminally ill and children with special needs. The artworks were reproduced on a range of Christmas Cards, which were sold nationwide to raise almost 10,000 euro for the organisation.
